Program for the 2nd Nordic Conference on School Absenteeism – How to Map, Treat and Target Absence among Students?

Welcome to a one-day conference with scientific and practical reflections on problematic school absenteeism from a Nordic perspective. Through a conceptualised understanding with measures and programmes to prevent, map, treat and target school absenteeism, invited speakers from the Nordic countries address academic problems and socio-emotional distress among students at risk. Among them, are an increasing number of students with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome and autism.

The psychologist works together with the youth, the parents, and the school on solving the problems lying under the school attendance problems. CBT techniques are used to help the families and another essential component is establishment of a constructive cooperation with the school. Focus is on the child’s perspective as one of the main strengths of the program. Some results will be presented.

  • A conceptualised understanding with measures to prevent and target school attendance problems (SAP) can address short- and long-term academic problems and socio-emotional distress. Through funding from an Erasmus+ - project on strategic partnerships, some Nordic experts began describing existing definitions and guidelines on SAP on the school, municipal, national, and transnational levels. As a result, a Nordic overview exists of efforts made to prevent and follow up on primary and secondary education -aged students at risk of SAP. Common challenges to overcome will be presented and discussed for future directions.
